Abstract:
Following the confirmation during evaluation of the location of the Tower Harratz, a tower located along the medieval defensive Portwall, excavations to fully expose Tower Harratz were undertaken. The tower, a circular structure measuring 13m in diameter, was found to be constructed of stone with a circular clay core and six clay 'spines' radiating from the core. The tower had been repaired and a butress built against the west face before the early 14th century. The Portwall was identified joining the tower, and a later continuation of the Portwall between the tower and the river bank was shown to have been constructed during the medieval period. A cobbled surface associated with a stone threshold of a narrow passage way through the later addition to the Portwall was dated to the mid-16th century. Two walls, one of which crossed the centre of the tower appeared to form part of what was assumed to be a Civil War gun battery, suggesting that Tower Harratz was in a ruinous state by the time of the Civil War. Archaeological levels contemporary with the tower's construction, its use, its partial demolition and re-use in the Civil War, including a cobbled stone slipway, survived but were only sampled during the excavations.
