Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out within the churchyard of St. Mary's Church in advance of a proposed extension to the north transept. Trench 1 at the northern end of the site revealed layers containing finds of 17th-18th century and earlier date. Covering this was a former topsoil layer, cut by the butt end of a linear feature. These lay beneath another two layers containing 18th-20th century finds. A post hole like feature was cut immediately below the modern topsoil. Trench 2, against the north wall of the nave recorded a cut into the natural clay. This was most probably a grave cut and fill, or possibly a robbed out foundation trench. This feature was sealed by a former topsoil layer containing finds of 18th to 20th century date. The observed features were cut into natural clay which may have indicated that the site had been cleared to natural when the church was constructed in 1722. No evidence for former buildings within the churchyard were recovered. [Au(adp)]
