Abstract: |
The development area contained the sites of two tanneries, located at the northern and southern ends of the site, and part of a manure and fertiliser works, located at the eastern side of the site. Two trial trenches were excavated within the tanyard of the southern tannery site to test for the survival of tan pits and associated tannery buildings and features. The evaluation confirmed that archaeological deposits relating to a tannery survived intact beneath later made-ground. Parts of four well-preserved wooden tan pits and a number of later structures were identified within the development area. Part of the tanyard surface associated with the pits, which appeared to have survived to their original height, was also revealed. The tan pits appeared to be the earliest features identified by the evaluation, and concurred with those shown on an OS map of c.1860, although they may have significantly pre-dated the mapping. A flagged stone surface, at the same level as the tanyards surface, was also identified. [Au(abr)] |
