Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out suring groundworks associated with improvements to a park which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance. The site was located within the medieval walled town of Southampton. The remains of a medieval building survived nearby, and a series of medieval vaults fronted onto the High Street, to the east. The medieval church of St. John's lay immediately to the north of the park, on the site of the present Mission Hall. During the watching brief, the footings of a stone-built structure of probable medieval date and the foundations of the 19th century Corn Store were observed. Footings which were interpreted as possibly relating to St John's Church were also found, beneath the foundations and superstructure of the Mission Hall, and a brick wall interpreted as a post-medieval property boundary was noted.
