Abstract:
Two evaluation trenches (15m x 1.8m, 26m x 1.8m) and five test-pits (1.8 m square), were excavated in order to fulfil a condition upon planning permission for the extension of the school. Previous excavations had revealed a Late Iron Age site consisting of an enclosed settlement some 46m by 61m existing across the site. Trench 1 revealed 3 distinct features, a broad shallow hollow, a possible post hole, and a narrow ditch. This ditch was believed to be the enclosure ditch and cut the shallow hollow. Trench 2 contained a shallow gully or slot which shared orientation with four other 'weak linear' features which had been identified in an earlier geophysical survey. None of the other trenches or test-pits contained anything of archaeological significance. The evaluation reinforced the perception that the main body of archaeological information was concentrated in the north-west corner of the school site. However, there was still the possibility of features contemporary or pre-dating the 1st-century enclosure on other parts of the site. The report concluded that these were unlikely to be understood by narrow slit trenches or test pits alone. [Au(adp)]
