Abstract: |
A walkover survey and watching brief was undertaken on the construction of a pipeline. Saundby, first recorded in 1086, contained two areas of earthworks representing earlier phases of village development. A walkover survey was carried out on the pumping station site, and at the discharge sewer site, located next to Hillcrest. No archaeological features or artefact were visible at either location, except a sherd of possible Midland Purple ware (late medieval). At the pumping station site, no archaeologically significant features or artefacts were seen during topsoil stripping. At Hillcrest, ridge-and-furrow cultivation was recorded, orientated north/south, but no archaeologically significant finds were recovered. It was concluded that the village had never extended this far along Marsh Lane. The ridge and furrow recorded at Hillcrest showed that the site lay within the open fields of the village in the medieval period. [Au(abr)] |
