Abstract:
A recorded observation was undertaken during the excavation of the foundations of a new school room block at Beechwood Park Hertfordshire as a condition of the planning permission. The existing house was principally developed in the 17th and 18th centuries and in the vicinity of this structure was believed to be the remains of a Benedictine priory. This priory was then adapted for domestic purposes after the Dissolution (post 1537). With the exception of two stray medieval sherds all the evidence was indicative of post-medieval activity. The earliest elements appeared to be a wall and two circular features. The south-east end of the temporary access road was rich in archaeology, most of which appeared to relate to gardening activity. The wall was aligned on one of the present day surviving garden walls though the brick and bond were of different type. The ground appeared to have been lower at some time and appeared to have been drained by 19th century pipes revealed during the excavation. Subsequent horizons of chalky flint and building material possibly represented a deliberate policy to build up the ground levels. This spread and a second wall appeared to belong to a structure which had possibly still been standing in 1980. The proximity of the site to the house suggested that the area once formed part of the private pleasure grounds or garden. The first wall was probably the principal boundary of this garden until the ha ha was built in the 19th century. Cartographic evidence suggested that the ha ha was built sometime between 1838 and 1877. The report concluded that the evidence seemed to indicate that the only buildings in the vicinity of the new school block were of comparatively modern date and that this part of the site was almost entirely of post-medieval date.
