Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed enlargement of the existing building and conversion for residential occupation. The study found that the study site lay outside of the built core of the City of Bristol until modern times. No prehistoric finds had been discovered in the vicinity of the site so the potential for any to be found on this site was so low as to be negligible. There was no evidence for settlement in the immediate area during Roman times, although two Roman lead pigs were found close by in the 19th century. This was probably an isolated find and the potential for remains of Roman date to be found on the site was also low. Bristol grew around a central Saxon core, which lay to the west of the study site. During the medieval period the study site lay beyond the eastern suburbs of the city in the Earls Mead estate, which was used for agricultural purposes by the monks of St. James' Priory. This usage continued into the post-medieval period when the estate passed into private hands. The site appeared from map evidence to have first been built on during the early 18th century. There was some potential for there to be pockets of survival of remains from these buildings on the site. Subsequently the site was developed for tanning and vinegar production and residential purposes in the form of 19th century terraced housing. These buildings were demolished during the late 20th century and the existing office block was built on the site during the 1970s. The site lay close to the Rive Frome and was frequently flooded. The extensive water management schemes to control this in the late 19th century probably lay close to the south side of the site but just beyond it, although there was a possibility that evidence of earlier features such as ditches may have been present on the site. Such archaeological deposits as may have existed on the site were likely to have been severely damaged by the 19th century development of the site and to a lesser extent the later development. If a sequence of archaeological deposits had survived on the site it was likely to have been very similar to the sequence recently excavated and recorded on the eastern side of Houlton Street. Such remains as might survive were likely to have been of local significance only. [Au(adp)] |
