Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of two drainage trenches at Tamworth Castle, a Grade I Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. One drain ran down the motte, from a point on the perimeter wall of the castle. However, the groundworks did not penetrate significant archaeological deposits. It was observed that deposits at the foot of the motte were protected by hill-wash of at least 1m in depth. Recent changes to the design of the gardens at the foot of the motte were noted; probable late 19th century divisions had been replaced by curving grass verges and fence-lines. Fragments of hand-made brick and post-medieval pottery were found. [AIP] |
