Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that a mill had lain in the north-western part of the site since at least 1638. The subsequent excavation of three evaluation trenches revealed the remains of late 19th century mill structures. In situ remains of a wheel pit, wheel-house and gear room included brick-built walls and floors, timber beams and iron stanchions. The original sides of the tail race channel were identified, and a culvert constructed of smelting pots was recorded. A further line of deliberately placed smelting pots, upright and intact, was also encountered. Artefacts found included ceramic sherds, copper alloy objects, window glass, paper, textile, animal bone and glass vials. It was concluded that the site of the mill complex could be stated to have a medium/high archaeological potential with reference to the standard criteria for judging the worth of archaeological remains.
