Abstract: |
An earlier evaluation had identified the presence of sand deposits, from which struck and burnt flint was recovered, identified as part of Horselydown sand island, known to be the focus for prehistoric activity through previous investigations in the locality, buried beneath thick deposits of alluvium. Remains of post-medieval tanning truncated the alluvium. A prehistoric ditch and possible post hole were found in association with a soil horizon containing burnt and struck flint. This was overlain by alluvium, peat and further deep alluvial deposits, cut by timber-lined and brick-lined tanning pits representing two phases of post-medieval tanning activity. [Au(adp)] |
