Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken to identify the nature and extent of the recorded archaeological resource within both the site and its immediate environs. Pottery dating to the 3rd or 4th centuries AD was recovered from the topsoil during a watching brief within the site. This material may have suggested that the site was cultivated from one of the Roman sites present in the wider vicinity; the material having been deposited during the manuring of the fields with domestic refuse. However, it was possible that the material indicated the presence of a separate settlement focus in the immediate vicinity of the site, conceivably within it. No features were observed during the reduction of the ground level by c.0.4m within the footprint of the gymnasium. A pipe works, probably producing clay tobacco pipes was present at the north-eastern corner of the site, depicted on some sources from 1812 to 1955. It was possible that remains of the works survived below the present ground level. Some of the site had been disturbed by modern development. [Au(adp)] |
