Abstract:
The evaluation clearly established that the level of survival of archaeological deposits within the site is extremely poor. Within all of the trenches natural ground was found to be at, or just below, the current ground level with overlying deposits, where present, consisting either entirely of modern sub-base for the concrete or tarmac hard-standing, or imported topsoil. In situations where all archaeological deposits have been cleared away down to the top of the natural substrate but natural ground has not been significantly disturbed one would still normally expect to find evidence of past occupation or use of the site in the form of cut features such as truncated pits, ditches, wall foundation trenches or post holes. No evidence of such features has been found within this site. It is known that the site was developed from at least the seventeenth century thus the absence of such evidence must mean that the 20th century terracing into the former natural south-facing slope has been so extensive as to remove even relatively deep dug features. Examination of the Bretonside frontage where truncation should have be minimal also failed to locate any archaeological material. Here, as elsewhere within the site, the natural substrate was clean and firm with none of the weathering which one would normally expect if the exposed surface had represented the undisturbed interface with overlying deposits. It has also been established that the buildings that would have occupied the frontage would not have contained cellars. The only evidence for cellarage was found within the western half of the site (trench 3). It was of probable nineteenth century date and had been heavily disturbed by later services. Trenches excavated to either side established that that the cellars did not continue; natural ground exposed virtually at modern ground level. [Au(adp)]
