Abstract: |
An evaluation, using a range of techniques including fieldwalking, trenching, augering, palaeoenvironmental analysis and supporting documentary research, was undertaken on land proposed for mineral extraction. The study had four main objectives: to map the subsurface topography of the peat/alluvium and assess the potential for palaeoenvironmental remains; to characterise the cropmark ditches and map their extent; to test if parts of the rectilinear system of ditches existed to the north and those recorded by cropmarks; and to map the evidence for other archaeological and historic land-use.
