Abstract: |
A limited archaeological assessment was carried out on the northern end of the Manston Lane Link Road. The site of the former Barnbow Munitions Factory lay to the north of Manston Lane, adjacent to the northern end of the proposed road scheme. The site was now being actively considered for scheduling by English Heritage and earlier assessments of the potential impact of the proposed road scheme had not considered this site. In addition, the route bisected an area of amorphous earthworks between the Leeds to Selby Railway Line and Manston Lane whose nature and significance required further clarification. The assessment demonstrated that the main complex of the munitions factory site lay outside and to the north-east of the proposed development and would be unaffected by the proposed development. The area of the munitions factory encroached upon by the scheme was both very small and lay to the south of some railway sidings which appeared to have formed the practical, functional limits of the factory site. Only the site of a former guardhouse at the south-west corner of the site would be affected by the scheme and this building appeared to have been replaced by a later dwelling. The area of amorphous earthworks appeared to relate to either sand or coal extraction and examination of aerial photographs showed that these workings were overlain by narrow ridge and furrow. This suggested that the area came back into agricultural use in the later post-medieval period and therefore the earthworks were either later medieval or early post-medieval in date. [Au(abr)] |
