Abstract: |
An evaluation consisting of four trial trenches and fieldwalking was undertaken on part of the area of a proposed quarry extension . The boundary identified during the preliminary assessment was sectioned and recorded; several phases of boundary were identified, consisting of a hedgebank with faced wall and ditches. Four post-holes and elements of a wall which probably formed part of a single structure, probably an agricultural building of medieval or post-medieval date, were identified in one of the larger trenches. The ditch identified during the assessment proved to be a sub-circular pit. It offered no evidence of function or date. Fieldwalking yielded domestic ceramics dating from mid-19th to mid-20th centuries, but no other archaeological evidence. A limekiln, worthy of archaeological interest lay to the south of the quarry.
