Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of development proposals. The site was located within a part of the medieval town of Nottingham established by at least the early 12th century. St James' Street was recorded from 1395 and probably dated to the original town, taking its name from St. Jame's Chapel, first recorded 1178-1180. The earliest useful map (1609) showed the street built up on the northern frontage for most of its length (including the site). No records of cellars within these buildings were traced, but this is not proof that none existed. By 1949 they had been demolished and the existing buildings date from the 1960s. No caves within the development site were recorded in the BGS Cave Survey, but a system was recorded on the opposite side of the road beneath no. 223 with an extension beneath the street and the possibility that more exist can not be ruled out. It is probable that damage was done to any archaeological deposits during former works, but there is no evidence for this. [Au(abr)]
