Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was produced prior to the submission of a planning application for the redevelopment of the site. The site lay just outside of the historic bounds of the City to the east of the line of the Roman and medieval City wall. It was possible that some horizontally stratified deposits may have survived in pockets across the site, outside of the basemented area, for example, under the car park ramp. No horizontal stratified deposits were considered to have survived in the area of the sub-basement but the remains of deep intrusive features such as wells, rubbish pits/cesspits and ditches may have been present. Heavily truncated horizontally stratified deposits may have been present beneath the first basement slab. To the north of the site a two metre depth of Roman, medieval and post-medieval stratigraphy had been revealed. It was recommended that geotechnical/archaeological trial pits be excavated in the basements, in order to identifiy the nature and extent of any surviving deposits more precisely. [Au(adp)] |
