Abstract:
An archaeological assessment comprising a geophysical survey, desk-based assessment and test pit programme was undertaken on the proposed route of the Trevone Regional Sewage Treatment Scheme. In a county renowned for its prehistoric sites, the area around Harlyn Bay was notable for the density, levels of preservation and quality of the finds produced. These were dominated by features relating to mortuary practices of the Bronze and Iron Ages. The area of study did not disappoint, a large amount of potential prehistoric features ranging from funerary sites to settlement enclosures were identified during the geophysical survey. The test pit survey came up with nothing of archaeological significance. In response to the results of the assessment it was concluded that more intensive archaeological investigation be undertaken into the features identified by the geophysical survey and that the proposed route be altered to avoid damage to any sites deemed to be of importance.
