Abstract: |
Test-pitting and trial trenching on land proposed for development off Lower Road identified that the majority of the proposal area had been disturbed by terracing, presumably for the construction of houses lying immediately to the north of the main area of the site. A negative terrace appeared to have been cut into the hillside truncating the ground surface in the northern part of the site and the resulting spoil used to create a positive terrace over the rest. However, an earlier ground surface was found surviving below modern made ground or dumped deposits on the southern side of the site. Below the earlier topsoil was a colluvial deposit which contained material of prehistoric, Romano-British and medieval date, almost certainly originating upslope to the south of the site. [Au] |
