Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of an extension within the grounds of the former Great Hospital, which was founded in 1249. Three trenches were excavated. Within one, a pit containing post-medieval brick, roof-tile and pottery fragments and a second, undated, pit were revealed. A post-hole which contained no artefacts but which cut into layers containing post-medieval material was also recorded. Medieval pottery was found, and a metal-detector survey recovered numerous modern objects representing the area's recent horticultural use. [AIP] |
