Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the stripping of topsoil at the site of an extension to a gravel quarry. A number of archaeological sites had been recorded in the surrounding area, including an earthwork known as the Launditch, groups of Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pits, and Iron Age features. During the watching brief, numerous pits and post-holes were recorded, some of which contained sherds of Bronze Age and Iron Age pottery. One small pit contained fragments of iron-smelting slag. Three phases of activity were identified, although a great many of the features remained undated. The excavated evidence as similar in nature to that recovered during earlier quarrying in the area immediately to the east. It probably represented intermittent occupation at the site during the prehistoric period. [Au(adp)] |
