Abstract: |
A detailed geophysical survey was carried out as part of a programme of site investigation prior to the proposed residential redevelopment. The survey results provided good evidence for a set of ridge and furrow, with a 7m spacing, orientated parallel to Dancing Lane. Further strong geophysical anomalies indicated a pattern of linear ditches crossing (and beneath?) the ridge and furrow which almost certainly denoted a pattern of croft divisions fronting Dancing Lane. Several of the ditches detected by the survey appeared to contain deposits with a particularly high magnetic susceptibility, suggesting the presence of fired clay or other burnt material. A compact intense of dipolar magnetic anomaly close to the western boundary of the site may have indicated the remains of a structure with thermoremnant magnetism, such as a kiln or hearth.
