Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the submission of an application for planning permission for the construction of a used car outlet and associated car parking and landscaping across the site. Documentary, geological, archival and cartographic sources indicated that the site lay in an area regarded as having archaeological potential. Little evidence was known for Roman, Saxon or medieval occupation in the immediate vicinity but the site lay in an area well known as having important potential for prehistoric archaeology. The incidence of significant archaeological discoveries from this period in the area indicated the likihood of prehistoric remains across the site. While previous development activity would have had some impact on any archaeological remains present, it was likely to have been localised and therefore any such remains would have surived undisturbed over at least part of the site. For these reasons, and as the current planning application would also impact on any remains present -the proposed building did not coincide with any known previous structures, an archaeologooical evaluation was suggested.
