Abstract: |
Although there was little indication of prehistoric settlement in the coastal lowland, it was likely that the river estuary and coastline at Whitby was exploited during this time. There was evidence that the locality was occupied during the Roman period. Whitby was occupied during the early medieval period. Excavations show the area around the Abbey on East Cliff underwent much redevelopment from the mid 7th century onward, and there may have been further evidence of earlier settlement. The area around the harbour had been settled since at least the 12th century. During the medieval period the town grew as a North Sa fishing port and shipbuilding centre. The town was made famous by the two voyages of Captain Cook in the 18th century. [Au(abr)] |
