Abstract: |
A fluxgate gradiometer survey, covering c.12 ha, was carried out of the proposed opencast site. Anomalies indicative of infilled archaeological ditches, forming enclosures that may have been part of a more extensive 'ladder settlement' had been identified in the north western part of the proposed site. Areas of magnetic enhancement within the enclosures were probably occupation features. To the south-east similar anomalies were probably caused by ditches used to subdivide the landscape. These latter anomalies were on a completely different alignment to the possible 'ladder settlement', which could have suggested different periods of activity. Little archaeological activity was detected in the southern part of the site as much of this area had been disturbed by previous mining activity. [Au(abr)] |
