Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out beneath the double pilasters on the left-hand side of the south face of Hylands House, which dated from c. 1730. The building was originally a red-brick Queen Anne style mansion with stone quoins, but had been modified in the 18th and 19th centuries. The main aims of the evaluation were to determine the nature of the Georgian perimeter trench and balustrade, which had probably been buried or destroyed during the 1797 phase of modification, and to establish the nature of the window-lights which were once part of the original house. During the evaluation, structural features dating from eight different phases were revealed. These included one of the original window-lights, the brick base for the 1797 double pilasters, a drain and a large cut feature of indeterminate function. However, no trace of the surrounding basement perimeter trench of the original house was discovered. [AIP] |
