Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed redevelopment at a hotel, which was a Grade II* Listed Building dating from the early 19th century, with parts which were possibly older. The site lay within the area enclosed by the medieval defences of Taunton. During the evaluation, a probable post-medieval cellar and a stone wall which marked the line of the medieval street frontage were revealed. Several post-medieval pits, one of which contained the skeleton of a dog, and a 12th-13th century pit, possibly a quarry pit, were also recorded. A small assemblage of finds, mostly of post-medieval date but including six sherds of medieval pottery, was recovered. [Au(adp)] |
