Abstract:
An air photo investigation was commissioned following excavations at the site of Barnburgh Hall. The client required the mapping and interpretation of probable archaeological features visible on aerial photographs to provide a wider context for the results of the fieldwork. 324 vertical air photographs and 79 specialist oblique air photographs were consulted for this survey. The combined evidence of the Walled Garden investigations and this survey indicated that late prehistoric and/or Romano-British settlement and farming may have extended from the magnesium limestone to the valley floor in this area. It was possible that the pasture fields which surrounded the village of Barnburgh, as well as the woodland and parkland, concealed and possibly even protected other remains of these earlier landscapes. Earthworks of diverse origin and function survived in the field in the north of Barnburgh Hall. This air photo survey alone could not evaluate the significance of these features to the historic development of the Hall. [Au(abr)]
