Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office and two-storey car-park development identified that a Palaeolithic handaxe, Mesolithic and Neolithic flints and possible Bronze Age settlement and funerary sites had been recorded in the surrounding area. Roman tiles had been found at a distance of c. 600m from the site, and three Saxon barrows had lain to the south-west. Archaeological investigations in the Phase 6 area to the north of the site had revealed at least 1.5m of stratified deposits dating from the late 12th-13th century, which included stone walls of buildings which may have represented part of the medieval suburb of Styvington. Struck and burnt flints and a sherd of probable Bronze Age pottery had also been recovered at this site. It was concluded that the proposal area had a high archaeological potential, particularly for the medieval period along the street frontages. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out. [AIP] |
