Abstract: |
The scheme took place within an area defined as a Scheduled Ancient Monument of National Importance (SAM) No. Devon 446. The replacement gas main operations in the area of Hoe Road and the Citadel had not disturbed any significant archaeological remains or deposits. The fill material in Trench 1 probably related in part to the late 1888 modifications to the outer defences, but it may also have related to later landscaping works, as the artefacts recovered could not reliably confirm a date. In pit 1a the construction material for the 1888 road surface over original ditch was encountered. The one sherd of 17th century "Westerwald" pottery from the deposit below the granite setts was a residual sherd from the 1888 ditch infilling episode. [Au(adp)] |
