Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The three components of the development proposal lay within an archaeologically rich part of the region, which was identified by its inclusion within the Borough Unitary Development Plan as an archaeological priority area. This designation was primarily defined by the presence of the historic (medieval) core of the village, which almost inevitably included the parish church as its focus. However, in this case, given both the GLSMR entries for the study area and consideration of the wider context, several other areas were prominent. The area was noted for preferential occupation in the Mesolithic period and occupation sites of this date had been investigated in the immediate vicinity of the site. Similarly, the area was noted for its Late Bronze Age finds and deposits. Deposits of Roman date were noted for the Wandle Valley area but may not be present in the study area in any great density or complexity than in other parts of the region. However, unusually, a case could be made for a cluster of early/middle Saxon settlement for the study area. The three components of the development were all similar in extent and would have similar foundations designs. For the area of the old church hall and rectory, which were to be demolished, the new development could well have an impact on below ground archaeological deposits. It was recommended that for these two areas the impact of development on below ground archaeological deposits should be assessed by field evaluation. The proposed location of the new church hall, to be attached to the church, was more problematic. The position of the new building and the potential effects of the digging of foundations was clearly of some interest. The new building would be located in the former graveyard, an area of the site likely to have been deeply disturbed by grave cuts and, if used subsequent to the Burial Act of 1852, the grave cuts were likely to be very deep (6') and would probably have truncated any archaeological deposits cutting the underlying natural geology. It was considered, therefore, that evaluation of this area was inappropriate. It was suggested that the removal of human remains of post-medieval or modern date in this part of the proposal site take place in advance of the commencement of foundation works and be carried out by archaeologists or under archaeological supervision.
