Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring of ground excavations was carried out over winter and spring of 2005 for residential occupation which involved property conversion and refurbishment. The properties were both Grade II Listed Buildings of 18th and 19th century date. Ground level reduction over the line of the precinct wall in No.3 revealed a discrete raft of very substantial worked stones which appeared to pre-date the building and may have been material re-used from the wall as properties extended across its line. To the south of this an exposure of the base of wall (1) (which ran on the putative line of the Precinct wall) revealed a spread of sandstone block, possibly the base of the Precinct Wall. Elsewhere ground reduction and the cutting of service or foundation trenches failed to reveal any medieval deposits, although subsoil was not reached in any excavation and archaeological stratigraphy would have almost certainly survived below the level of intrusion. During the excavation for services in the passageway to St. Mary's Chare towards the east of the properties, rather precarious historic building methods were observed, where the southern passage wall of No. 3 had been constructed over the southern edge of a vaulted cellar.
