Abstract: |
A single trial trench was excavatd as an archaeological evaluation of the proposed site for the Millenium Wheel. The trench measured 10m by 3m and was located within the eastern part of the site, in the area of the principal proposed foundation and some 60m from the modern riverbank. The evaluation revealed a sequence of waterlaid deposits, relatively sterile but including a layer of peat. Samples of the latter, taken during a previous geoarchaeological borehole, produced radiocarbon dates of AD 670 to 1260. This deposit also yielded a rich assemblage of plant evidence. Cutting into the highest of the alluvial deposits was a small timber conduit, probably of early 18th century date. This was in two joining sections and was constructed of softwood planks. Above this was an 18th century demolition/makeup layer which contained some kiln furniture. [Au(adp)] |
