Abstract: |
The excavation of four small, hand-dug test pits at 18 Market Place, Rugby (a site at the north end of the medieval market place), was observed by an archaeologist. Each pit was positioned alongside a wall to determine the depth of foundations. At no time was the natural soil reached in any of the pits and the only pottery found (in Pit 6) was 19th century in date. The test pits demonstrated that there was a build-up of at least 0.8m of 19th century and later material from the rear to the centre of the property. The earliest layers encountered, which pre-dated the existing buildings of 1894, were again of 19th century make-up, but the survival of earlier remains below could not be ruled out.[AIP] |
