Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for coal extraction identified that no evidence of prehistoric or Romano-British activity had been recorded within the site or in its immediate environs. Documentary sources indicated that the principal historical interest in the site lay in medieval and post-medieval agricultural and industrial activities. Surface features were located during a walkover survey. In the west part of the proposal area, agricultural remains were observed at Site 1 which included a pathway and the possible remains of a shed, yard and track, possibly of late 18th and 19th century date, as well as a dew pond. A possible early post-medieval industrial building lay at SIte 3, whilst a probable post-medieval gin engine, likely to pre-date 1845, lay at Site 4. In the east part of the proposal area, ridge and furrow of a probable 19th century date, partly overlying a park boundary which was likely to have been of medieval origin, was observed. Areas of documented early coal-mining lay either outside the actual review area or had already been open-cast. However, there was some potential for the recovery of undocumented medieval and post-medieval mining remains in undisturbed areas. Further archaeological investigation of several areas was recommended. [AIP]
