Abstract:
A desk-top assessment was made of an extensive area proposed for the site of a fifth terminal at Heathrow Airport. Within the study area, finds dating from all periods had been recorded and several important sites were known. The area was particularly rich in Neolithic evidence; the Stanwell Cursus ran through it. A round barrow, probably of Early Bronze Age date, was partially excavated in 1971. This was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Iron Age defended settlements had been recorded, and a hoard of bronze animal figurines had been found. Roman finds were widely scattered over the area, but Saxon finds were scarce. Documentary and other evidence for thirteen medieval settlements was found. It was concluded that watching briefs would be a minimum requirement during construction.[AIP]
