Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken in relation to proposals for the proposed construction of a basemented multi-storey office building. The site did not contain any Listed Buildings or SAMs and did not lie within an Archaeological Priority Area. However, documentary, geological, archival and cartographic sources indicated that the site lay in an area regarded as having some archaeological potential. There was evidence for archaeological deposits in the Croydon area spanning from the prehistoric period through Roman, Saxon, Medieval and post-medieval. The foundations and services for previous and existing buildings on the site would have had some impact on any underlying archaeological deposits and features. A report by Waterman Environmental Consulting Engineers and Scientists stated that there was 'up to 6.1m of made ground identified across the site'. Boreholes and window samplers had shown that this consisted mainly of modern concrete and other modern materials. This indicated that it was extremely unlikely that any archaeology would have survived on site. [Au(abr)]
