Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during test-pitting and the removal of contaminated material in relation to a housing development at a former garage site. Although a house with gardens and subsidiary buildings was known to have occupied the site in the 16th century, it was considered to be of low archaeological potential because of the widespread disturbance which would have resulted from construction of the service station. During the watching brief no archaeological deposits were recorded in the southern part of the site. However, a section of brick wall and a flagged surface were recorded along the north-western perimeter. These probably related to terraced houses shown in this area on the OS map of 1875. A section of wall built of large dressed blocks of pink sandstone, which appeared to have been part of the rear wall of the 16th century house, was also noted. 18th-19th century artefacts were identified but were not retained.
