Abstract: |
The watching brief has shown that the site area was heavily truncated by mid 19th century development. Nevertheless, the site revealed on feature of significance, in the form of the mortared flint and chalk wall foundation. This may have been contemporary with the construction of Wickham Court in the 1470s, and certainly is likely to relate to buildings show on a plan in 1632. Moreover, the shape of the feature and historic map evidence both suggest that it may have formed a chimney base. There were no other significant remains on the site, although one piece of worked stone of probable 15th or 16th century date was recovered.[Au(adp)] |
