Abstract: |
Monitoring of footing trenches revealed a very high level of ground disturbance principally associated with the digging of pits and wells. Most of the pits were undated but it was suspected that a high proportion were late medieval to early post-medieval in date. Numerous disturbances to the site from this date reflected on the continuous occupation of the street frontage from the 16th century and on small scale industrial activities occurring in the back yard areas. An earlier medieval presence on the site remained a possibility but could not be confirmed. Despite the large number of disturbances recorded in the footing trenches the ancient ground surface was intact across much of the site. [Au(abr)] |
