Abstract: |
The watching brief observed a prehistoric layer containing struck flint and a sherd of Iron Age pottery. Twenty six stake holes were assumed to be Saxon, some of these cut into the upper prehistoric layer, which itself only survived across part of the trench as it had been cut away by a Saxon pit. The pit was of Middle Saxon date and extended across the excavation area, except where it was cut out by modern features. The pit was overlain by Middle Saxon occupation layers and a Middle Saxon hearth. The archaeological sequence was truncated by the excavation for the modern cellar floor and by other late intrusions along the northern and eastern sides of the trench. A total of 15 archaeological contexts were recorded. [Au(abr)] |
