Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a site which lay c. 300m north-west of a Late Bronze Age sub-rectangular enclosure, which formed part of an extensive pattern of prehistoric settlement in the area of the Chelmer Valley. Two early 20th century features were identified, and occasional plough marks were noted. No further features were revealed, but a piece of worked flint and a number of sherds of prehistoric pottery, derived from a single vessel, were found. The pottery was similar to the larger and better-preserved assemblage recovered during excavation of the nearby enclosure. It was concluded that prehistoric activity had probably been confined to a small area towards the west end of the site, and that it had not involved the digging of deep features. Agricultural use of the field would have removed much of the evidence for this activity. [AIP] |
