Abstract: |
Phase 2 of the archaeological evaluation comprised the investigation of a singe trench. The Phase 2 trench lay within the boundary of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Hadrian's Wall corridor. In Trench 2, located to the east of the phase 1 trench, an area of cobbles though to be an east-west aligned surface was recorded towards the centre of the trench. This feature may have been Roman in origin and was interpreted as a path or area of hard standing located a short distance to the south of Hadrian's Wall. A further deposit of cobbles was recorded to the north, although this was less cohesive and may have been disturbed. In the southern portion of Trench 2, a deposit containing much charcoal, along with sandstone rubble, was recorded. A spread of roughly hewn stones was recorded in the south facing section of the trench. These were interpreted as possible demolition debris from Hadrian's Wall. These stones may have been deposited during the construction of a military road in the mid-18th century over the levelling foundations of Hadrian's Wall. [Au(abr)] |
