Abstract:
sites within the area of proposed development. Three Bronze Age barrows, one of which had been excavated, were indicated within the area of interest. Just to the east of the study area was a probable Late Iron Age settlement site marked by a large enclosure complex. Excavations had identified both Roman and Iron Age activity on he south-east side of the Roman road, now called Icknield Way. Evidence for the road and its flanking ditches may have remained west of Smannell Road. The presence of a Roman burial to the north of the road had suggested the possibility of a cemetery within this area. The site of Eastanton Farm seemed to have been the centre of later medieval activity. Aerial photographs had suggested a possibility that there was a small deserted settlement towards the north-east corner of Bartholommewsbury field. [Au(adp)]
