Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks at a development site which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance. Excavations to the south, west and north-west had revealed parts of the extensive middle Saxon town of Hamwic. The closest discovery to the site had been the remains of an 8th century church and graveyard, situated within 15m of the development. During the watching brief, no evidence of activity pre-dating land reclamation in the 19th century was observed. Photographs were taken of standing buildings at the site which were possibly of 19th century date, prior to their demolition. More detailed recording of these could not be undertaken. No evidence of pre-19th century dry land was observed, and it was concluded that the Saxon shoreline must have lain beneath Marine Parade, to the west of the site. [AIP] |
