Abstract:
Study of the SMR for the environs of the site indicated evidence for the prehistoric period (isolated flint tools in the Windmill Road area and occupation evidence to the west at Osterly Park), and there was potential for remains relating to both settlement and cultivation. There was also some evidence for medieval and post-medieval periods (centred on the site of Boston Manor House to the north). There was little indication of Roman and Saxon activity in the immediate vicinity of the site, although there may well have been agricultural remains. The site itself lay adjacent to the bank of the River Brent, canalised in the 19th century and now known as Grand Junction Canal, which may have lain further to the north in the past and could reveal evidence for river management and exploitation, with features such as revetments, landing stages and evidence for the fish economy. The area may also have contained evidence for palaeoenvironmental evidence relating to the past river regime, periods of flooding etc. [Au]
