Abstract: |
An archaeological investigation was undertaken in advance of the development of the site. Five trenches were excavated and the standing buildings at 57-59 Greenwich Church Street recorded. The earliest evidence for human activity on the site were dumped deposits in the east dated to the 12th century. These dumps may have been lain down to consolidate and reclaim marshy ground. An undated ditch in the west may have been part of the medieval effort to manage the local water table. A 13th century refuse pit recorded to the east suggested that the site at this time was still marginal land on the periphery of a settlement perhaps focussed on the area of Billingsgate. The earliest structural remains recorded on the site were cellars that probably belonged to a building (Building A) that fronted onto Greenwich Church Street and were dated to the 16th century. This first building seemed to have been quickly superseded by two buildings (Buildings B and C) that were apparently separated by a side alley. Wall foundations and surface layers defined these properties. A hearth was recorded as one of the internal elements to Building C. In the late 16th century or early 17th century Building C appeared to have been sub-divided and the alley blocked. Later on in the 17th century Building B appeared to have been rebuilt and the alley re-established. The property divisions that were established in the 16th century for buildings fronting onto Greenwich Church Street seemed to have largely remained intact until modern times. In the east, wall foundations and a chalk-lined cellar defined a 18th century buildings fronting onto Church Street which respected earlier property divisions. Water for these properties was probably drawn from wells to the rear, one of which was recorded. New property divisions were, however, established during the 18th century and a north south wall foundation may have defined properties fronting on to Thames Street to the north. In the west of the site a brick cellar may have been the remains of a building, built on previously open ground, that fronted on to Creek Road to the south. The remnants of a sewer were recorded running parallel with Creek Road and a service trench, a conduit perhaps for gas was revealed to the rear of 53-61 Greenwich Church Street. These municipal services were probably installed during the late 19th century. A survey of the standing buildings, 57-59 Greenwich High Street, recorded elements that dated to the 19th and 20th century. [Au(abr)] |
