Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of several potential development areas within and adjacent to the village of Sixpenny Handley was undertaken. Within some of these areas, a Bronze Age ditch, a Scheduled Bronze Age round barrow and part of a bank which may have been a remnant of a prehistoric field system had been recorded. An area of severely uneven ground probably indicated the remains of houses shown on 19th century maps. Many prehistoric monuments lay in the surrounding area. Scheduled remains included a Neolithic long barrow, Bronze Age round barrows and a Roman road. Mesolithic flints, a Neolithic cursus, a Bronze Age cremation cemetery, two Iron Age hillforts and Romano-British burials had also been recorded. Early medieval pottery and the remains of a medieval building had been found during excavations within Sixpenny Handley. The suggested potential of each proposed development area was stated, and it was noted that field evaluation may be appropriate in order to clarify these conclusions. [AIP] |
