Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at three sites on Hadrian's Wall. These were required since there was a potential for disturbance to archaeological contexts during the replacement of a ladder stile at Wall End Farm, and the construction of two new ladder stiles near Holmead Farm. All the structures lay within the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, and the SAM of Hadrian's Wall and Vallum. The on-site works comprised the monitoring of the excavation of 12 small post trenches to hold the legs of the ladder stiles, four trenches being required for each stile. The trenches were each 0.5m by 0.3m and consisted of a pair of trenches on either side of the wall over which the stile was set. No demonstrably archaeological artefacts were encountered, but a section of road 'metalling' was identified at Holmhead. This deposit was at least 0.4m in depth and may have represented a relatively significant archaeological context, of medieval or later date. [Au(abr)] |
